A Day of Empowerment

NaFFAA Illinois

Celebrating International Women's History Month 2016

The members of NaFFAA Illinois (Midwest Region 3 West) inducted 11 women during the 2016 Circle of Empowered Women (CEW) Educational Forum and Induction Luncheon on Saturday, March 26th in Skokie, Illinois.

This year's theme was Honoring Our Elders. The educational forum addressed timely issues including Filipino American Educational Downward Mobility, the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act, Cyberstalking, and senior services for our elders.

The CEW is a network, founded in the Midwest in 2004, which provides mutual support, leadership growth, and experience sharing, among women, to create the foundation for lasting personal and social change.

A Pew Research Center survey

shows that 40% of Internet users have experienced

harrassment, and that females of particular age cohorts endure higher rates of threats. Daliah Saper, principal attorney at Saper Law, and a leading media and entertainment attorney, will explore the impact of cyberstalking and cyber bullying.

Filipino veterans, who bravely took up arms for the United States during World War II, have long fought a battle for recognition. Emraida Kiram, a Filipino American community leader, will address the efforts of NAFFAA to obtain

recognition by the U.S. Congress and Senate for Filipino Veterans and to honor them for their efforts, and bravery, with Congressional gold medals.

When it comes to college degrees, research shows that U.S.-born Filipino Americans lag behind Philippine-born immigrants, and that females may be more affected. Rose Tibayan, CEO of

The Sampaguita Group, an Illinois-based non-profit which provides college scholarships to Filipino American women, will address the circumstances surrounding

this phenomenon.

Many women naturally are caretakers of their aging parents.  Michelle Lura White, Manager of Business and Workforce Development at Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA), will outline services which support older adults and their caregivers.  CMAA provides in-home services to seniors and individuals with physical disabilities and educates the community about programs.
